Kritesh: I can see for miles and miles and miles…

Women And Fingernails

A week back, I went to my Accounts class early, and as usual I was scribbling something on the back of my notebook (some joke, I think, its completely illegible right now – because of this stupid drawing I made on top of it >.< ) while waiting for Ritu Madam (our teacher) to come.

So, I heard a girl tell to her friend about her fingernail, I think she was saying that her fingernail got damaged or something. And then almost all the girls who heard that got into this huge 10 minute discussion (which ended as Madam came in) about fingernails.

How one is trying to grow her nails bigger. How another one almost broke hers. How her nails broke and she will now have to wait for months to grow them back.

I had never really thought about the fingernails in my free time (the 12 hours while I am awake) ever. Anyways, the Sherlock Holmes within me woke up, and I resolved that I would get behind this mystery.

I asked 2-3 of my friends about this, searched up google, thought about it before going to sleep (hoping my dreams would answer :P ) and I am  nowhere.

My friend Aishwarya gave me the reason, that since the fingers of women are slim, the long fingernails make them more attractive. (As close to a logical reason as possible)

Asking my sister Noopur yielded no results, instead she reminded me of women empowerment by the cheesy line “Every woman is a mystery”.

I couldn’t get in touch with my therapist Priyanka Didi, otherwise I am pretty sure I would have reached a conclusion by now.

A read about Egyptian culture revealed that manicure has been an ancient practice and long fingernails show feminism according to Egyptian mythology.

I for one (and 5 of my friends I talked to about this), range from indifferent towards fingernails to outright hate them. If men don’t find fingernails attractive, and we are not Egyptian and since fingernails are very ancient method of defense, why do women grow it? Not even grow, discuss it with passion and put thought into it. Why the obsession?

If I were a superficial guy, I would put fingernails on perhaps 18-19 item on my list of things to look in a girl.

Okay just now another friend came online and her explanation was “coz if you have longer fingernails, you look sexier plus you can color it “. Obviously, she had no idea why it looked “sexier”. She said (and I agree) is that it has been going on since decades and nobody really questions it.

Why do they even matter? I mean, I have never ever seen a woman’s fingernails and went “Oooh!” in my mind. If at all they reminded me of those 1960′s horror movies with the Dracula girl jumping on the back of a man and cutting his throat open with her fingernails. And I don’t find that very appealing :P

So, I am all clueless here. Please enlighten me. I am hopeful that so many women can’t be wrong. I must be missing something! Let me know in the comments >.<

  • Oh and before someone points out! I really am jobless enough to think and post about this >.<

  • Firstly, a very nicely written post. After reading it even i’m wondering why is it so(i do NOT fancy keping long nails EVER) but yes i found this reason a satisfying one – since the fingers of women are slim, the long fingernails make them more attractive.

  • Thanks :P

Only, it doesn’t make them more attractive (atleast not to the people I asked about). Am I missing something? Why is it supposed to be attractive in the first place? :P

Without this humour I wouldn’t pass my examinations! I scribble jokes in my answer script. How else do you think I pass? :P

And yes, that is one of the reasons to come early, it helps me get new funny material!

    @Aditya

That’s the point, you won’t escape. You can’t escape!

  • For the record, I don’t give a rat’s arse about long fingernails. My main priority is to keep them clipped and clean. I think it is more of a gender based preference, just like long hair is supposedly pretty, so are longer fingernails ( and many other long things too :p) so, basically, to cut to the chase, longer doesn’t mean prettier and definitely not more efficient.

P.S~ I just had some nice white wine.

  • Umm.. I suppose fingernails BY THEMSELVES aren’t sexy or attractive..but it might add to the overall well kepmt and maintained image of the person.

Not too sure though :P I do not bother with growin, painting, filing, etc. Nor have I ever spent precious money on a manicure!
